A practical starting point

Rug size guide

Use these general tips to narrow down your options, then measure your space before visiting the showroom.

Common rooms

Choose a rug that anchors the space

A rug usually looks more intentional when it relates clearly to the furniture around it rather than floating by itself.

Living room

For a connected look, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. In a larger room, place all seating fully on the rug.

Dining room

Allow enough rug beyond the table for dining chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out—generally about 60 cm or more on every side.

Bedroom

Position a large rug beneath the bed with a comfortable border visible at the sides and foot, or use runners beside the bed in a smaller room.

Hallway

Leave a visible border of flooring around your runner. Measure door clearances and avoid placing a rug where it may catch.

Entry

Check the swing of the door and select a low enough pile for easy clearance. Leave some floor visible around the rug.

Outdoor areas

Measure the seating or dining zone just as you would indoors and choose a rug specifically suited to indoor/outdoor use.

Three simple preparation tips

  1. Measure the room and furniture. Note the maximum and minimum rug dimensions that will work.
  2. Mark the size on the floor. Painter's tape can help you visualise the rug's footprint.
  3. Bring photos or colour samples. They make comparing styles and colours much easier in store.
